Cross Plains, Texas, is a small, historic community located in southeastern Callahan County in West-Central Texas. With a population of just under 1,000 residents, Cross Plains offers the charm and close-knit atmosphere of a rural town while maintaining a strong sense of tradition, pride, and community involvement.

Founded in 1877, Cross Plains has deep agricultural roots and a rich history. The town experienced significant growth during the oil boom of the 1920s and continues to reflect the hardworking spirit that helped build the community. Today, agriculture, ranching, and local businesses remain important parts of the local economy, and the area maintains a low cost of living compared to much of the nation.

Cross Plains is internationally recognized as the home of Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan the Barbarian. Howard’s historic home has been preserved as a museum and attracts visitors from around the world. Each June, the community celebrates its literary heritage with the annual Robert E. Howard Days and Barbarian Festival, welcoming fans, historians, and authors to the town.

The community also offers several attractions and gathering places that reflect its local pride and culture. Visitors and residents alike enjoy the Robert E. Howard Museum, Woody’s Classic Cars and Baseball Museum, and Treadway Park. Treadway Park serves as a central location for community events and features a modern pavilion used for gatherings, weddings, and the town’s annual Fourth of July celebration.

Covering just over one square mile, Cross Plains is a place where neighbors know one another, traditions are valued, and community events bring people together. Its rich history, cultural heritage, and welcoming atmosphere make Cross Plains a special place to live, learn, and grow.
